Former Lt. Governor Kerry Healey will be the first woman president of Babson College.

Former Massachusetts Lt. Governor Kerry Healey is set to take office as president of Babson College on July 1, becoming the first woman to do so in the entrepreneurship-focused college's 94-year history.

A news release from the college cited Healey's academic credentials, her experience in government and her advocacy for women's rights in Afghanistan. She holds a Ph.D. in political science and law from Trinity College in Dublin. She ran for governor in 2006, losing to Gov. Deval Patrick.

Healey, 52, of Beverly, will replace Leonard Schlesinger, who in December announced a plan to step down at the end of the academic year, after five years in the office. Healey said in February she wouldn't run for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry.
