Syracuse, N.Y. -- Sen. John DeFrancisco launched his annual push for Cell Phones for Soldiers, a group that helps overseas servicemembers make free phone calls.
The nationwide group Cell Phones for Soldiers collects old phones and sells them to a recycler in exchange for enough money to buy two hours of phone time. DeFrancisco, R-Syracuse, puts collection boxes at Central New York area malls, schools and libraries to contribute to the effort.
"All of us have cell phones somewhere in our house gathering dust," he said. All phones are accepted.
Since 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers have provided more than 168 million minutes of free phone time for troops.
Collection locations include:
DeFrancisco's office, 333 E. Washington St., Syracuse
