The Catholic Church has called on development stakeholders and politicians to render support to a clean water project for Igembe region.
The church is building a 40 acres dam in Nyambene forest. The church has said leaders in the area lacked the will to foster development as they did not support church projects.
Fr Andrew Biko who is in charge of projects funded by several churches and organisations from abroad, said if the political fraternity in Igembe and Meru county joined hands in the development of the project they would reduce the duration of time to complete the work. He said the project requires more than Sh10 billion to complete and if the money is made available the work would be complete in two years.
He said other water projects drawn from the mountain have taken many years to complete and gave example of Tuuru Water Scheme which benefits more than 200,000 residents of Igembe South and North residents. Fr Biko says the Meru Catholic Diocese had incorporated the provision of water as a target in its five-year strategic.
The project currently draws water from three major dams built along Ura River in the Nyambene forest and despite having sought assistance from the politicians in the area none of them has ever taken trouble to tour the project. He said the church will also establish an Eco lodge in the mountain to encourage tourism and help protect the water catchment of Nyambene forest by discouraging logging. The church employs 28 forest rangers.
