Close Encounters of the Cancer Kind: Is Philosophy a Preparation ...

There is nothing like a diagnosis of stage four inoperable lung cancer with bone metastases to give one a shock. I have known since I took logic as a young man that ?Human beings are mortal. Socrates is a human being. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.? However, I was not Socrates, and as far as I was concerned that syllogism was just an example of a valid argument. However, when you put your own name in place of ?Socrates? things look very different. Now I am an oldish philosopher (67), and suddenly the real possibility of my own death in the fairly near future has become a reality. Mortality approaches.

I know that philosophers concern themselves mostly with abstract and very general questions in epistemology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, etc.. By and large they do not approach philosophical questions from a personal perspective. Even death can be approached as an intellectual or conceptual problem. However, when Santa gave me my cancer diagnosis for Christmas 2011, abstract philosophy and my personal experience unavoidably came together. I now wonder if I can write in a very personal way about the universal truth that we are all going to die, what this means, and if there is anything of general import that I can express about what is happening in my own case. This breaks some common views of what philosophy is, but I do not have time to care about that now. So I am addressing you from a personal perspective, from my frame of life, and I ask your indulgence.

Let me state my tentative conclusion at the start. I do feel that having studied philosophy seriously for 46 years allowed me to keep my calm when the doctor gave me my diagnosis after a routine CT scan. For a second, I sat there feeling nothing at all. However, the next thought that came to me was gratitude for the life I have lived. Maybe other people do not feel this. Kubler Ross famously discusses five stages of grief and loss: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. I seemed to skip the first four. This is not to say that I instantly reached acceptance, but I did come first to gratitude. Now, after six months of living with lung cancer, I am trying to understand what acceptance of death may amount to.

Each of us can only judge and describe the world from our own time frame. If I had been much younger, my response to the diagnosis might have conformed more to Dr. Ross?s formula. The world looks very differently at different stages of life. Nevertheless, how one has looked, thought, and felt about life and death throughout one?s life has to make a difference at the end. In my case, the lens through which I have considered life has always been philosophical. Snatches of philosophical thoughts have lodged in my mind since I was was young. These are like seeds that took root deep in my mind and have matured and grown over the years. Now I feel that they are bearing fruit, helping me to live a new and deeper life. One nugget stands out to complete this first meditation on life and death.

Plato?s famously stated that ?Philosophy is a preparation for death.? The Greek word that Plato uses for ?preparation? is ?Melete? and the root meaning is ?care? or ?attention?. It can also mean ?meditation,? ?practice? or ?exercise?. So are philosophers supposed to ?practice? dying, or simply to recollect the fact of mortality as they live their lives? What difference will that make?

I confess a great love of Plato and his amazing Socrates. However, I cannot go along with his tentative conclusions. We know what Socrates argues in the Phaedo. The reason that practicing philosophy is a preparation for death is that Socrates believes that the soul and the body are separable, that the soul is immortal, and that a very different after-life awaits those who have lived a good or evil life. Therefore, it behooves us to separate our own soul from our body as much as possible while we live and to detach ourselves from the preoccupations of mundane life.

The reason that I admire Socrates in the Phaedo is that after giving his ?proofs? of the immortality of the soul, he has the greatness to admit that his arguments are only the reasons he personally accepts to advance his position. He does not claim that they absolutely prove the soul is immortal. It is a postulate of Socrates? practical metaphysics. In fact, he says that if he is wrong, and death is total extinction, then he will never know he is wrong, and his folly will be buried with him.

So in what sense can the study of philosophy be a preparation for death if one does not accept metaphysical dualism? I do not accept any such thing, but I still feel that my study of philosophy has helped me prepare for my present state. Does this mean that the study of any topic in philosophy will have this effect? I do not think so. I am not at all sure that one would prepare for death very well by spending 40 years working in the salt-mines of post-Gettier epistemology, nor in picking over all he convoluted arguments in mereology and inductive logic.

To see how the study of philosophy might be of value in preparing to die, we have to go back to the root meaning of ?philosophy? as the ?love of wisdom?. Wisdom is not a topic that comes up very much in contemporary philosophy. It was more to the fore in the ancient world, where wisdom, ethics, and the question of living a good human life were brought together in a philosophical approach to living. For me, loving wisdom has to do with taking up the largest possible perspective in which to live one?s life, going all the way back to the Big Bang, including all of space and time, the natural history of the universe, the geology of the earth, and the total history of animals and human beings on this planet spinning through a gigantic universe. It covers all the natural cycles of life and death and sees everything as part of this comprehensive whole. Somehow, living in this context has helped me see life and death as part of a seamless process. Death shadows life as naturally as the shadow one casts on the ground on a sunny day. There is no point in denying it, and no point in worrying about it. Perhaps acceptance lies in this direction.

Tools for Internet Marketing have been rising to popularity these days because of cost-effectiveness and the possibility of measuring increase in profits and sales.

Pay per click is a means to advertise business through the use of keywords/phrases in the search engines. The advertiser is required to only pay for each click that sends a visitor to his website. Overture, Google Adwords, Search Yahoo and Miva are just some examples of search engines. They offer top positions among the sponsored listings for particular keywords/phrases you choose. The idea for bidding is you have to buy/bid on keywords/phrases relevant to your business. The highest bidder gets to be on the top of the search result listing and the second highest bidder, of course, gets the next top listing and so on. Every time a visitor clicks on your website, you will have to pay the same amount that you bid on that particular keyword.

PPC can be very costly, time consuming. But if you know how to go about the step by step procedures, PPC is a welcome change to traditional advertising.

You usually type in a keyword or a set of phrase to guide you in your search to find what you are looking for. Either you use Google or Yahoo Search depending on where you are most comfortable at and where you usually get the best results. As soon as you key in the search button, immediately a long list of keywords or phrase will be displayed containing the keywords you key in. The first or the top link that you saw is most likely the one who bids the highest for that keyword you type.

The way to start PPC bid management is to identify first the maximum cost per click (CPC) you are willing to pay for a given keyword or phrase. CPC varies from time and even search engine to search engine too. Maximum CPC can be measured by averaging the current costs of bids (bids range from $0.25 to $5). Average of these bids is to be used as the maximum CPC to begin with. As your ad campaign progresses, the actual conversion rate will be determined and you may have to adjust your CPC accordingly.

When you bid, see to it that you adopt different bidding strategies for various search engines. Search engines have their own PPC systems that require different approaches. It is also worthy to identify different bids for the same keyword phrases in various search engines.

It is wiser not to bid for the top spot for two reasons: 1) It is very expensive and impractical, and 2) Surfers usually try different search queries in various search engines before they settle on the right one that fits to what they are looking for. This hardly results to conversion. Try to bid for the fifth spot instead and work your way up.

If you are now going steady on your PPC biddings, it is time for you to develop your own bidding strategy accordingly. It is important for you to track down which sites bring the bulk of your traffic and identify the ranking of your paid ads. This will help your bidding strategy to be effective and you should also decide where you want your ad to be positioned. Usually your maximum CPC will limit your choices.

Bid gaps (e.g. $ 0.40, 0.39, bid gap, 0.20, 0.19, 0.18) occur when there is a significant price increase to move up one spot in the PPC rankings. It is best if you take advantage of the bid gaps by filling them in so you can save up your cents. Often there are keywords worthy of lesser bids to get the appropriate ranking on the list and produce a good number of clicks and higher conversion rate rather than bidding higher but having a poor conversion rate.

Using pay-per-click bid management in promoting your website will only be successful if you take time building many lists across many engines and studying the performance of every listing. In this way, you can make the most value from what you spend in the bidding process. The key is to use the necessary precautions to stay ahead of the competition.

Bid Management Tools

In ensuring best results, you may use bid management tools. There are accepted and approved management tools that will help you in your bidding. They are categorized in two different types:

* Web based (services by monthly subscription) or,

* PC based (a purchased software)

Monitoring tools too may help in the tracking down of your keywords/phrases and search engines as to which among them often generate sales, overall and in relation to your cost per click.

These bid management tools may include additional functions that may not get from online marketing tools that are readily available. Other tools can monitor competitor?s bids, produce reports for different parties and offer the ability to interface with multiple PPC engines. This is particularly helpful to those who manage more than a hundred keywords across several PPC engines to boost productivity and save time.

Pay-per-click bid management is ideal for the effective promotion of your business online without the hassles of draining your financial keeping too much. It is now fast catching up as a means used in marketing your goods and services to reach to as many consumers as possible.

G-Technology G-Connect (500GB)

product 0.3
  • Pros

    Built-in router. Compact.

  • Cons

Must be connected to Internet via Ethernet for full functionality. No Wi-Fi passthrough. No battery. App limited to iOS at this time. Only USB 2.0. May require network swapping on your mobile device. Gigabit Ethernet won't work with Wi-Fi on.

  • Bottom Line

The G-Connect hard drive is a puzzle. It does a decent job of storing your data, and makes it convenient for your iOS device to access media content from it wirelessly. But there are a staggering amount of hoops you need to jump through just to set it up and configure it for use.

The G-Technology G-Connect (500GB) ($199.99 list) hard drive bills itself as wireless storage for your iPad or iPhone. However, since it lacks a battery, doesn't work with a portable hotspot, and requires a wired Ethernet connection to serve Web pages to connected devices, it doesn't really fulfill its potential. It will wirelessly serve media to your iOS and other mobile devices after much technical wrangling and configuring, but it's not incredibly easy to use. If you're the type of person who enjoys elaborate puzzles and challenges to make things work, then by all means try out the G-Connect, but for most users, there are other alternatives.

Design and Features
The G-Connect is a white portable hard drive with a large circular chromed "G" icon embedded in the top panel. It's pocketable, measuring about 1 by 5.25 by 3 inches (HWD). There's a row of white LEDs on the front panel for Wi-Fi, status, and power/hard drive activity. On the right side, there are an Ethernet port, port for the AC adapter, USB 2.0 mini, power button, and Wi-Fi button. The drive comes with a y-shaped USB cable, a USB AC-adapter cable, and a 2.5A USB power adapter. You can use the included USB power adapter to charge your iPad, but since there's no battery in the G-Connect, the power adapter will be plugged in all the time.

At first blush, this drive seems to compete with the Seagate GoFlex Satellite Mobile Wireless Storage(500 GB) ($199.99 list, 3.5 stars), but while the GoFlex Satellite is meant to move with your portable devices, the G-Connect is meant to be a stationary drive with some wireless router features built in. You're meant to connect the G-Connect up to your wired router, so that way you can serve your data wirelessly to devices in your home like iPads and iPhones. The G-Connect lacks the battery that the GoFlex Satellite has, but you could of course carry it with you from place to place in order to share media with your friends away from your home. Just don't expect to use it in the middle of a field or where there are no power outlets. The wireless router inside the G-Connect can support about five users, so those five users can surf the Web (provided you have the Ethernet hooked up) and access the media on the drive. If you don't have the G-Connect hooked up to an active Ethernet port, you can still share media wirelessly, but you can't surf the net. If you're using a portable hotspot like a MiFi for your Internet, you'll have to switch back and forth between the two networks. Ditto if you're in a coffeeshop with its own hotspot network. The G-Connect doesn't support Wi-Fi pass through like the updated GoFlex Satellite does now. The Ethernet port does double duty. In addition to passing through Internet traffic, it can serve media to DLNA and iTunes-compatible clients on your home network, as long as the files are in the public folders of the drive. You can also access the G-Connect's shared media on your laptop via a built-in web server, but the iOS app is a lot more polished. G-Technology by Hitachi has promised an Android app in the future, but you'll have to use the web page for your Droid phone or tablet now. If you spend some time with it, you will probably get to a point where most if not all of your media files are available on your network(s). This brings us to the inherent problem with the G-Connect. It's confusing. There are so many conditions that need to be realized so that the G-Connect can work "perfectly". You need a wired Internet connection. You need to be serving less than seven clients on the G-Connect's wireless network. You need to load all your media then wait for the drive to catalog it all and create thumbnails. You need to make sure the files are in the correct public folder(s), otherwise only the admin account holder can access them. You need to copy your files to the drive manually, there's no automated media-gleaning program as on the Seagate GoFlex Satellite. You need a power plug handy. The drive works with Apple's Time Machine backup, but you'll have to reformat the drive to HFS+ first. You need to know the difference between connecting to your home wireless network and the one served by the G-Connect. You have to manage the G-Connect's security. You need the iOS app on your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad to use the G-Connect to its fullest potential (Android app is coming soon). You're stuck at copying at slow USB 2.0 speeds or slower network speeds, since there's no USB 3.0 connection. The G-Connect has a Gigabit Ethernet port, but it only works at 10/100 speeds if the Wi-Fi radio is on. You can't use the G-Connect with a portable hotspot (like a MiFi), because the built-in router needs a wired connection for the Internet. Basically, even if you consider yourself to be a technically savvy person, you're still looking at several hours just setting the drive up and copying stuff over. In conclusion, the G-Connect feels like it was put together by a committee of people with different ideas: You really have to put yourself in the mindset of several designers and engineers to get things working. While it also requires some configuration, the Seagate GoFlex Satellite is more powerful, easier to load and setup, and ultimately a better way to share your media among a group of mobile device users. If you need even more power or need to support more users, then a full-blown media serving NAS is what you want. The G-Connect is a challenge to setup and use, and it really should be easy.

Putin visits Berlin, Paris amid divide over Syria

(AP) ? Vladimir Putin can expect to face pressure from the leaders of Germany and France for a change of heart on Syria when he visits Berlin and Paris on Friday ? but there's little sign that the Russian president is prepared to tighten the diplomatic screws on Bashar Assad.

Putin's meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and, later, with new French President Francois Hollande are part of his first foreign trip since returning to the Russian presidency.

The visit to the 17-nation eurozone's two biggest economies reflects a policy course driven primarily by Russia's economic interests.

Still, Germany and France will want to bend Putin's ear on the escalating crisis in Syria.

Russia, along with China, has twice shielded Assad's regime from United Nations sanctions over his crackdown on protests.

Without a new Xbox or PlayStation will E3 be...boring?

10 hrs.

Longtime video game analyst Michael Pachter ? never one to mince words?? has this to say about the world?s biggest video game show?which is about to get under way next week: ?It'll be one of the more boring ones.?

Saying that the Electronic Entertainment Expo might be a snoozer is a bit like saying a trip to Las Vegas might lull one into a pleasant night's slumber. After all, the annual E3 game show, which has been around since 1995, packs the Los Angeles Convention Center with a bedazzling display of video game showmanship. With 200-some exhibitors showing off their gaming wares for ?45,000?retailers, reporters and analysts, it is a visual and aural overload of flashing screens, colored lights, thumping music and outlandishly decked-out booths and booth attendants.

But Pachter, managing director at?Wedbush Securities, has a point. This year?s E3 is shaping up to be less than sizzling ... at least for the moment.

As of right now, much of the exciting news that gamers spent previous months hoping to officially?hear about now appears to be on hold. For starters,?Microsoft and Sony have insisted they will not be revealing anything about their future game consoles at this year's big event.?(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

Meanwile, as Pachter points out, the video game industry is in an odd place at the moment.

?We are in the unprecedented 6th and 7th year of the cycle,? he says, explaining that the current generation Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii have grown into rather aged machines.?That means?game sales are declining as developers and publishers ??unwilling to take risks this late in the console life?cycle ??scale back on the number of games they produce and cut back on the number of refreshing new intellectual properties they create.

?The industry isn?t that exciting because it?s all sequels, no new IPs, no new consoles and fewer games,? he says. ?So E3 is, by definition, just not going to be as exciting or interesting as it?s been in the past.?

E3???the thrill, the excitement
In the past, E3 has been the place where game companies have revealed some of the very biggest gaming news. Sony unveiled the PlayStation 3 there in 2005. Microsoft first revealed Kinect (then called Project Natal) at E3 in 2009 and fully unveiled it at E3 in 2010. Nintendo introduced its 3DS at the 2010 E3 and then, at last year's expo, unveiled the Wii U.

While rumor has it that Nintendo may reveal a new model of 3DS next week?and we will certainly get a much more in-depth look at the forthcoming Wii U,?so far it appears there will be no big game machine introductions this year. No Xbox 720. No PlayStation 4.

Meanwhile, rumors of a Valve-created game console/set-top box (aka the Steam Box) were making the rounds a couple months back with many hoping we'd see its unveiling at E3. But Valve insists that's not happening any time soon.

And it seems even some of the titles?we gamers had most hoped to see won't be making the?show.

While Valve will be on hand at E3, those from the company have vowed they will not be showing off "Half-Life 3," "Portal 3" or "Left 4 Dead 3" ? despite high gamer hopes.

The folks who created the famed Halo franchise were as surprised as anyone when their newest four-game "Destiny" project was unceremoniously outed in the press last week. And expectations have been high that Bungie might officially introduce "Destiny" at E3. But Bungie officials have now said on their blog that, and I quote: "we?re not going to be at E3 in any official capacity this year. Some of us will be there, lurking from booth to booth, but don?t expect any announcements."

E3 boring? Say it ain't so
But Mike Gallagher, CEO of the Entertainment Software Association (the industry?organization responsible?E3) ? sees things a little bit differently, to say the least.

While some see a games industry in a lull, "I see is an industry in transition," he says. "What I see is an industry that is evolving. It is evolving on multiple platforms constantly. Right now you have the ability to have a game experience on your smartphone, on your handheld, on your tablet and you?ve got the?ability to play on the consoles."

And he says E3 is evolving with the industry. He points out that this year there will be some important new faces on the show floor.?Zynga ? the Facebook gaming superpower ? and Gree ? the social and mobile gaming king in Japan ? both?will be at E3 for the first time.

But Gallagher?concedes that with it looking as if there will be no big hardware revelations at E3, "This year the emphasis will absolutely be more strongly focused on the games and the software."

And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Game companies have already started to unveil some of the new games they'll be showing off next week ... and some of it is pretty exciting stuff. We'll get our first look at the new mature-themed Star Wars game "1313," as well as the super-dark, super-hero fighter "Injustice." And while new IPs are few and far between, the dystopian steam-punk adventure?"Dishonored" looks well worth getting excited about, as is the new game from "Heavy Rain" creator Quantic Dream (assuming it actually materializes).

Meanwhile, of course, developers and publishers will be showing off new installments in some very big franchises: ?"Halo 4," "Gears of War: Judgment,"?"Call of Duty: Black Ops II," "God of War: Ascension," "Pikmin 3" and the new "Tomb Raider"?just to name a few.

Beyond the games themselves, if the rumor mill is to be believed, there are some interesting things afoot?that may just give the show a bit of zing -- a 3DS redesign, a landscape-changing?push by Sony into cloud gaming, and?a new music service for the Xbox are a few of the?possibilities?next week.

No matter what this year brings, our own In-Game editor Todd Kenreck believes E3 is still one of the coolest events out there. Check out his video above to understand why.

And it's important to remember that the seeming lack of excitement could be deceiving ? especially since game developers and publishers like to keep their biggest, most interesting news a secret before the show has begun and have been known to spring completely unexpected gaming software and hardware revelations on the thousands of attendees gathered at the convention.

Ultimately, Gallagher says?you can't truly judge an?E3 before it's begun.

"Each E3 has its own unique feel and its own unique power," he says. "And it really can only be measured after the show --?after it?s all over with and?after all the titles are shown."

And despite his prediction of a mellower E3 this time around, even Pachter points out, "It?s still a lot of fun."
