Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger dies

Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who guided the newspaper to unprecedented influence and profit during his three-decade tenure, died Saturday at his home in Southampton, N.Y., at the age of 86.

During his 34-year run as publisher, Sulzberger helped the Times navigate some of the most influential events in 20th-century journalism ? everything from the Vietnam War and the publication of the Pentagon Papers, to key legal victories for freedom of the press.

Sulzberger, who went by the nickname "Punch," helped expand the Times to a national edition as it won 31 Pulitzer Prizes under his leadership.

In this 1992 photo, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger poses for a photo in the New York Times boardroom??

"Punch Sulzberger was a giant in the industry, a leader who fought to preserve the vital role of a free press in society and championed journalism executed at the highest level," said Associated Press President and CEO Gary Pruitt.

Sulzberger took over as publisher in 1963, when the Times had a weekday circulation of 714,000 and $100 million in annual revenue. By the time he turned over the publishing reigns in 1992 to his then 40-year-old son, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., the newspaper had turned into a media conglomerate, owning newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations as well as online endeavors. It had revenues of $1.7 billion, and its circulation had expanded to 1.1 million, according to AP.

"Above all, he took the quality of the product up to an entirely new level," the late Katharine Graham, chairwoman of The Washington Post Co., said at the time Sulzberger retired as publisher.

Sulzberger remained chairman of The New York Times Co. after passing the role of publisher on to his son. He retired as chairman and chief executive of the company in 1997, when Sulzberger Jr. was named chairman. Sulzberger stayed on the Times Co. board of directors until 2002.

While Sulzberger might have transformed the New York Times during his tenure as publisher, his death comes at a time when print journalism is in a tailspin, and the industry is trying to navigate a world where people increasingly get their news online.

At a conference in September of 2010 his son was asked if the New York Times would print its last edition in 2015.

According to the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers' Web site, "Sulzberger (Jr.) said he saw no point in making such predictions and said all he could say was that "we will stop printing the New York Times sometime in the future, date TBD.""

The Web site clarifies that Sulzberger Jr. "was not making an announcement that the New York Times has definite plans to stop printing in the near future; rather making the point, in a joking fashion, that it is impossible and fruitless to predict exactly when printed newspapers might come to an end."

While the end is debatable, its current state is not good.

According to Paper Cuts, a Web site tracking the newspaper industry, 21 newspapers folded in 2011 and over 1,810 people in the industry have lost their jobs due to buyouts or layoffs in 2012.

[Related: Sulzberger set milestones for NY Times, journalism]

While newspapers have traditionally offered its content for free, that could be changing, with the New York Times playing a major role.

In March 2011, the Times announced that it would "begin charging the most frequent users of its Web site $15 for a four-week subscription in a bet that readers will pay for news they are accustomed to getting free."

Since 2009, 16 newspapers have moved their operations to Web-only versions.

Vanity Fair published an article in 2008 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of what would become the World Wide Web. The article included a discussion of how newspapers viewed the online venture.

"The media people essentially did not think the Internet would be important or disruptive," Vinod Khosla, who helped create Sun Microsystems, said in the magazine. "In 1996, I got together the CEOs of nine of the 10 major newspaper companies in America in a single room to propose something called the New Century Network. It was the CEOs of The Washington Post and The New York Times and Gannett and Times Mirror and Tribune and I forget who else.

"They couldn't convince themselves that a Google, a Yahoo, or an eBay would be important, or that eBay could ever replace classified advertising."

Journalism Web site Poynter.org reports that the decline in print classified advertising went "from $19.6 billion in 2000 to roughly $6 billion in 2009."

According to the Times, Sulzberger "guided The New York Times and its parent company through a long, sometimes turbulent period of expansion and change on a scale not seen since the newspaper's founding in 1851."

It remains to be seen where the company will go now that he's gone.

Biden, 69, seeks Florida seniors' votes for Obama

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) ? Joe Biden may just be the perfect pitchman for the senior vote.

Seeing Medicare as a window to gain new support, President Barack Obama's campaign dispatched the vice president to two sprawling Florida retirement communities Friday, hoping a white-haired 69-year-old running mate will be able to stir enthusiasm among seniors in Democrat-rich South Florida and tip the scales for the state's 29 electoral votes.

"It makes sense," says Charles Zeldon, a Nova Southeastern University expert on politics and voting. "He is one of them."

Well, at least closer than Obama, a generation younger.

That may give Biden an edge in helping the president chip into Republican Mitt Romney's lead among senior citizens, a key voting bloc not only in Florida but other battleground states such as Iowa and Ohio. The Democratic campaign doesn't expect to win the majority of seniors, but hopes that lowering Romney's totals could make the difference in close states.

Biden has spent much of the campaign trying to shore up support among white, working class voters, another group where he has a more natural connection than Obama. He's aiming to use his same affable, plain-spoken style to persuade older voters to back Obama.

He stopped by a local deli later Friday, where he greeted a man who informed him he had once shaken the hand of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

"I'm shaking a heckuva hand," Biden announced. The man identified himself to reporters as Seymour Maiman, 85, of Ft. Lauderdale.

Biden hit all the expected notes before a crowd of about 850 at Century Village in Boca Raton, a popular campaign stop for Democrats. He spoke of Obama as a defender of popular entitlement programs like Medicare, and portrayed the plans of Mitt Romney and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan as harmful to seniors and their families.

"What they don't tell you, what they really don't want to talk about, is how they'd fundamentally change Medicare," Biden said. "They'd turn it into a voucher program."

When it comes to Medicare, the Republicans say the Democrats have it backward.

Ryan, speaking to an AARP conference last week, declared, "The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare because it represents the worst of both worlds. It weakens Medicare for today's seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation."

"Who are you going to believe?" Biden asked on Friday after unleashing a barrage of criticism of Republican plans.

Ryan's Medicare proposals have been a frequent target for Democrats, but Biden went further, saying a vote for the GOP would also lead to hundreds of dollars in tax increases on seniors' Social Security benefits.

"They cannot possibly continue and add to the tax cuts for the super wealthy unless they eviscerate the rest of the budget," he said.

Again, the Romney camp said, Biden had it exactly wrong.

"Vice President Biden is using Social Security to fabricate the Obama campaign's latest false attacks," said spokesman Ryan Williams.

Inside the Century Village clubhouse, a Democratic-friendly but sometimes cantankerous crowd didn't muffle any complaints. "We can't hear you!" some shouted when the volume was too low. "Sit down!" when their view was obstructed. And, at least once, "This music is awful!"

But Biden was met with loud applause and beaming faces.

"I'm a Joe fan! I'm a Joe fan!" said Judy Cloutier, 66, who came to hear Biden speak. "He's such a down-to-earth man. He's like salt of the earth."

Dot Tillett, 67, said Biden was the right running mate for Obama, and a good choice to send to talk to seniors. "He's a perfect complement," she said. "He communicates well with people of all types. He's just that kind of guy."

Dorothy Schayes, 87, was less enthusiastic about the vice president, calling him "a joke." But deeply behind Obama, she hoped others were paying attention to the Medicare debate, which she said spurred concern for her 16-year-old granddaughter.

"I think there's trouble for her," she said. "So he needs another term."

At the deli later, the vice president also made a detailed sales pitch to a customer who had questions about Obama's health care overhaul.

"You will be able to get better health care than you get now in terms of cost for a lot less money," Biden told Steve Grossman, 39.

Younger people also are being enlisted by the Democrats in going after the elderly. The Obama campaign announced a new e-card effort asking young supporters to send messages to their parents and grandparents telling them their Social Security and other benefits are at risk under Republican plans.

Seniors, like people in most demographics, are largely decided on who they'll vote for in the election. So making sure supporters turn out at the polls is important for both campaigns. Nationally, the 65+ population votes at a higher rate than any other age group.

Florida has a higher proportion of people 65 and older than any other state, and its total population of nearly 3.3 million seniors is second only to California. An estimated 68 percent of seniors in Florida voted in the 2008 presidential election.

A national Associated Press-GfK poll earlier this month found 52 percent of seniors supported Romney compared to 41 percent for Obama. But Democrats have sought gains among seniors by criticizing Romney's plan for Medicare, and a Pew poll released last week showed older voters who rate Medicare as a very important issue supported Obama by a substantial margin.

Zeldon said the resurgence of the Medicare issue has given an opportunity to Obama with older voters.

"He sees them as a vulnerable population for the Republicans," Zeldon said. "When they raised the issue of Medicare, they gave the Democrats a gift, because it allows them to give their ideas about Medicare and it's an easier sell."

make money online: Are you curious about Being an Internet ...

There are some great advantages to being in Internet network marketer. It's easy to get free leads on-demand, you can make product sales daily, and you get downline sign-ups. There are some giant challenges involved.

Even before starting searching for a product there are a bunch of things that you have got to know before you can become a successful Internet network marketer.

The truth of it really is you're in the business to make sales. If you do not know anything about how to sell or the psychology of selling then there is a mass of info that you ought to be conscious of first. The words "sales" and "buying" are massive no-no's nowadays but you have to learn about them anyway, and learn to master the techniques behind selling before you can most likely become a successful Internet marketer.

Sales are a part of selling and selling is surely the name of the game nowadays. That's a fact.

In order to learn how to sell to people you have got to understand the psychology behind selling. You've got to leave your purchaser feeling satisfied and confident he has made the correct decision, and that he got precisely what he wanted. As an Internet marketer you'll have to use your abilities to make an attention grabbing series of videos or an internet site that stands proud, with offers the prospect may not be ready to resist.

People truly do not like to be sold to. All through the buying process they prefer to think they are in control. Many sales are made through impulse or for emotional reasons ; when they have committed to buy they'll go through a method of justifying their purchase to themselves. Being in sales suggests that you've got to lead these folk gently by the hand and assist them in making a decision.

Selling Methods behind the successful Internet Network marketer

Part of the psychology of selling is offering folks what are known as "decoy" offers. If as an example you are pushing cosmetics, shall we say starting point for sake of discussion. If you were offer one bottle of the foundation at a hefty price folk will know it is not a very good deal, but if you offer a buy one get 2 free offer at a touch higher price then she's going to be interested, she will see that it is a far better deal and purchase all three bottles of foundation.

Clients have a hard time making their minds up, so you must not offer too many choices, different colors being a good example, if people get baffled by too many selections they may simply depart without purchasing anything. The most noteworthy Internet network marketers will offer up to three options or choices. And this is applicable to anything concerning prospects enrolling for your opportunity. Attempt to make the best priced package deal the most interesting for your new team members, but don't offer more than three choices.

If someone does not want something they'll say no and they will continue to say no, your job is to make them say yes. See what their challenges are. What is it they detest the size, the brand, the name, or the price? If you might remove the thing they object to, then they are going to stop saying no thank you.

That old saying that you get what you pay for pricing. If you have priced your product way lower than your competitor's product people are going to think there's something's wrong with it, low prices are fairly often compared with low-quality, so don't price anything too reasonably.

Give folks the idea that they are special and you do not just sell your products to any Tom Dick or Harry. When folks are told they can't have something, like kids, they're going to try even tougher to get it it's very often the item that has sold sign on it. You can turn this peculiar psychology the wrong way up to your advantage.

Limited offers and scarceness are another one look at Xmas toys for youngsters there's always one each year that people fight over, although the company possibly made 10,000,000 of them! As in the example above, the kid wants what he can't have and mum and dad will pay thru the nose for it solely to keep him quiet. So pronouncing that there's a small amount of your product will mean that people will get it immediately for fear of losing out.

Use caution how you work these restricted time offers, don't say that something is only available till the final day of the month and then continue offering the product through the month after next. Folks will become suspicious and think that it was a fraudulent offer or something was wrong with the product.

These are several things that you should do not forget if you would like to be successful at internet network promoting. Of course, in network marketing the key to your success will be massive lead generation. You will need a steady stream of new prospects in order to promote your products and opportunity. Without leads you don't have a business.

The most successful Internet network marketer will spend most of his time building a downline, and generating traffic and highly qualified leads.

Streams Of Water Once Flowed On Mars; NASA Says Photos Prove It

Pathfinder, 1997: The first mission to land a rover on Mars, Pathfinder touched down in Ares Vallis, an ancient flood plain in the planet's northern hemisphere. Among the 2.3 billion bits of data sent back by the lander and its rover, Sojourner, were 15 chemical analyses of rocks and soil, which suggested Mars had once had liquid water and a thicker atmosphere.

    NASA

NASA's Curiosity rover has found definitive proof that water once ran across the surface of Mars, the agency announced today. NASA scientists say new photos from the rover show rocks that were smoothed and rounded by water. The rocks are in a large canyon and nearby channels that were cut by flowing water, making up an alluvial fan.

"You had water transporting these gravels to the downslope of the fan," NASA researchers say. The gravel then formed into a conglomerate rock, which was in turn likely covered before being exposed again.

The agency's scientists presented their findings of the former streambed on Mars at a news conference today.

"A River Ran Through It," Curiosity's operators tweeted Thursday. "I found evidence of an ancient streambed on Mars, similar to some on Earth."

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second," said Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich, "with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep."

The rocks have not undergone scientific analysis. But the NASA team says that taken with geographic data from Mars orbiters, the photographs tell a story all their own.

?

The images show rocks with round, smooth surfaces; many of them have been broken down into sizes smaller than one inch in diameter.

"The shapes tell you they were transported and the sizes tell you they couldn't be transported by wind," co-investigator Rebecca Williams said. "They were transported by water flow."

"There is earlier evidence for the presence of water on Mars," the agency said in a press release, "but this evidence ? images of rocks containing ancient streambed gravels ? is the first of its kind."

NASA's team has named the rock outcrop that reveals the former streambed "Hottah," after Canada's Hottah Lake.

Scientists have not yet estimated the age of the rocks, which may have been buried beneath the surface. Their age could be several billion years.

The next step will be to find a good spot to drill into the rock, NASA says. And they'll be looking for possible carbon deposits, to determine whether the water on Mars once supported life.

The photographs released Thursday are among more than 13,000 raw images Curiosity has captured. The rover took the photos during its mission to Mars' Gale Crater. The rocks in question lie between the crater's north rim and Mount Sharp, a mountain inside the crater.

NASA investigators presented the results of their analysis at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. You can read other posts about Curiosity in our archive.

Palace to cyberlaw critics: Wait for the IRR

MANILA, Philippines - Malaca?ang appealed to various groups opposing the cybercrime law to wait for the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) but stressed it respects their decision to question it before the Supreme Court.

The Cybercrime Prevention Act, which was published in newspapers last September 18, takes effect 15 days after publication - or on October 9.

?Number one, what is the position of government? The position of government is, look, we already have responsibilities attached to print, TV, and radio, so what the Cybercrime Act does is to also attach responsibilities in cyberspace," Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing on Thursday, September 27.

"You?ve got freedom to report - the freedom of expression is always recognized but freedom of expression is not absolute. We know that for a fact,? Lacierda added.

?And I think, more than anybody else, the journalists are very responsible when it comes to writing articles, they know the parameters. The only concern in cyberspace are the people who are not familiar with being responsible about what they write. And so, if we take away (responsibility), if it?s absolute freedom really?ultimately, you?ll be impinging on other people?s rights,? he said.

Journalists, lawyers and media organizations have said that the law's provisions on libel and state power to shut down websites violate freedom of expression.

President's veto

Asked why the President did not exercise his veto powers on online libel, Lacierda said the recommendation was for approval because before the law was given to him for signing, the Office of the Executive Secretary prepared a legal memorandum for it and it was recommended for signing.

Lacierda said he hopes the IRR would be able to address the concerns of various sectors. "Some people have already resorted to, going to the Supreme Court, that is their right,? Lacierda said.

Among the chief critics of the law is a member of the ruling Liberal Party, Sen Teofisto Guingona III, who filed a petition before the Supreme Court on Thursday asking it to declare some provisions of the law unconstitutional.

Lacierda said this recourse is better than hacking government websites, which happened Wednesday night, September 26 and attacked the sites of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the water administration system, among others.

Lacierda said the new law was discussed during a social summit last weekend sponsored by Rappler, Tweetup Manila and several organizations but ?as in any other law, there are venues if somebody would wish to contest the provisions.?

?However, as it stands right now the law is there, IRR is being drafted, maybe we can talk to those who will draft the IRR. Of course, we also know that the IRR should not be greater than the law itself. The water cannot rise above the source,? Lacierda said.

Be responsible

?If you want to express yourself, we can express ourselves in a decent manner. If you want to criticize, you can criticize without getting to licentious. Those are really just the concerns. There should be responsibilities. Freedom is there, we recognize the freedom to express oneself. But, we should be reminded that the responsibilities which are present already in media, in radio, in TV, should also be present in cyberspace. There should be no fear of expressing oneself, I think, that?s the most important thing,? Lacierda said.

Asked about apprehensions that the government might use this law to go after critics, Lacierda said: ?You don?t have to have cyberspace to do that. We?ve seen that?We have the freedoms expressed in media so, these are not different. If I?m not mistaken, the definition of libel in the Cybercrime Act was lifted from the Revised Penal Code. So, the definition did not change,? Lacierda said.

?The wisdom has been expressed through the Cybercrime Act. These legislators agreed that that particular provision should be included. The position of the President (Aquino) is that there should also be responsibility in cyberspace. Now, as to (amendments)? lawmaking is not our department so, we assume that once it leaves the hands of the legislature, there?s presumption of regularity,? Lacierda said. - Rappler.com

Which YouTube Network Should You Sign With?

Posted by Benny Luo on Thursday, September 27, 2012 ? ?

Recently, I?ve been a getting a good amount of calls from my YouTube friends asking for my opinion regarding which network they should sign with. We?ve written about the 5 things you should know before signing to a YouTube network in the past, but I wanted to write an updated post going more in depth for those who are on the fence about exactly which one they should choose. While I don?t have any direct experience working with specific networks, I can definitely give you guys some good tips based on what I?ve seen other creators have to deal with. So without further ado, here are my personal 5 tips when choosing which specific network to sign with.

5 1 Which YouTube Network Should You Sign With?

1. Take the bad press you hear from others with a grain of salt

A few networks have been publicly called out in the past on issues involving contracts, management, marketing, etc. While I believe that you should do proper research so that you don?t get screwed over after signing, keep in mind that this is a business ? a competitive business where networks are fighting over the best talents available. No matter what people tell you, both parties are out to get the best deal possible. That doesn?t mean that they?re necessarily shady ? its just business in the end. With that being said, if a network really fits with what you want to do, make sure you do your due diligence in protecting yourself legally (see the next point for details).

2. HIRE A LAWYER

I don?t care how expensive they are ? find a good lawyer that you trust and who will sit down with you to discuss your goals. Then have him carefully review/revise the contracts that are presented to you from the networks. If money is a huge issue, one trick I?ve used in the past to get free legal advice is to call up the lawyer and offer to take him out to lunch in exchange for a short consultation when you guys meet. I?ve saved myself a TON of business disasters in the past getting advice from lawyers. Remember: this is your business career we are talking about, so this is an investment you shouldn?t skip out on.

3. Research your audience

While having a great contract and percentage split is great, one of the most important things to take into consideration is whether a YouTube network?s target demographic aligns with yours. You can have the best deal possible, but signing to a network with a different audience than the one you cater to is like putting a History Channel segment about the life of Carl Sagan on Cartoon Network ? no one that visits that network is really going to watch it. How do you research your audience, you ask? Well, by using just a few tools at your disposal you can get a rough estimate:

  • Step 1: Go to your YouTube ?Analytics? tab and click ?Demographics? on the left sidebar.
  • Step 2: Go to Quantcast.com
  • Step 2: Type in the main website of the potential network you want to sign with, then scroll down for demographic data.
  • Step 3: Compare how closely your audiences align with each other. The closer it is, the more the network can potentially be a good fit for you. While Quantcast days is not entirely accurate, it gives you some valuable data to help you with your decision.

An even better alternative is that you can simply ask the network for data on their audience and compare that way as well.

4. Figure out what your goals are, and see if they align with the potential network

You really need to sit down and map out what you want to do for your career as a YouTube creator in the long term. Do you want to just stick with YouTube, grow your audience and monetize? Or are you trying to get work outside of YouTube? These things come into play when it comes to signing with a specific network. After you map out a long-term plan, ask for the same from your potential network to see if their plans for you align with your plans for yourself. Some networks focus a lot on aiding the creator on the production end of things, while others may focus more on getting their talents work offline, and yet others focus on building subscribers and monetizing their channels. While some may claim that they can do everything, I personally believe that the truth is that no one can really succeed by spreading themselves too thin, so spend time to really figure out which areas potential networks specialize in to see if they fit with what you need.

5. Meet with employees of the company and see if you vibe well with each other

In the entertainment industry, I believe that it?s very important that you work with people that bring good vibes and help raise your creative juices. That starts with doing your best to align yourself with people who you trust and are comfortable working with. As a good friend in the industry always tell me, ?It?s not about the company you work with, it?s the people?.

For your convenience, here is a list of the applications links to all of the major networks in alphabetical order. Please email info[at]newmediarockstars[dot]com to add any other networks I?ve missed, and it?ll be added to the list.

Web Marketing: Tips For Unlocking Your Company's Potential | Eric ...

Do you have a great business idea? Thankfully, the internet does offer that. With your ideas, you can turn it into a money making enterprise, and with good marketing, you can becomes very successful. Use these tips for some help on your way.

Don?t delete stuff that hasn?t yet worked. What did not work at one time, may well work in the future. The web is forever morphing, new things are always becoming popular. So try out new strategies for marketing and think about blending old ones with new ones to see what works for you.

While email marketing services can be helpful, you might want to try doing it yourself first. Once you understand how the process works, it becomes simple to use bulk mailing lists, auto responders and mass mailers. All of the experience you acquire will help you out as well.

TIP! Make sure your website covers all the little things, as well as the big. Your company name should be placed prominently at the top of every page of your website.

A good way to get your contact list built up is by using a squeeze page. This is basically a gateway that solicits website visitors for their email addresses before they continue. You can offer a free item if they give you their email address. This is a win-win. They get a nice discount and you can increase the power of your list overall.

Hold promotions and events that will get people to your site. This may include short-term sales or fun incentives for extra purchases. The people that flock to your site for their free ebook will likely take a look at anything else you are selling. Some of them will probably buy a product or two.

Add a chat function to your website so your customers can interact to exchange information and ideas. People will identify with your brand if they can discuss things they enjoy with people who have similar interests. People are naturally drawn to others with shared interests, which makes them highly likely to bond and connect with your business.

TIP! Provide incentives to those who refer others to your site. It is not hard to transform a single sale into five if you offer people a freebie or a discount for referring five people to the website.

It is important for Internet marketing purposes that websites are kept somewhat simple, and this is often overlooked by webmasters. Glitzy multimedia tools, such as Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash may lure website owners, and professional web designers frequently offer these tools. Not every person that visits a website has special software that enhances their internet experience. Your website should be functional, even if all of the flashy extras are turned off.

When planning your Internet promotion strategies, use a variety of techniques and approaches and don?t put all your effort into one narrow pathway. This point is key when first starting out, as it is difficult to get the momentum of a steady flow of income going. Do not quit your stable job before you know your business will support you.

To be successful at marketing online, you need to maximize your website?s potential. You need to create an original design, organize your site so it is easy to navigate and write quality content every week. How a website presents itself is a major determining factor as a visitor decides whether to stay or look elsewhere.

TIP! When using Internet marketing, use the word ?guarantee? in your ad. When people purchase something, the people that are buying it want to know they are going to have a smooth purchase.

Emphasis tools are an excellent way to help the words on your website stand out. Make the text more visible with bold or italics. This can improve clarity and direct the focus of the reader.

Try and make all the information you send out through correspondence as personal as possible. People don?t like receiving bulk emails addressed to ?Dear Sir/Madame? or ?Hello Friends!? Aren?t you really tired of spam mail. Targeted, personalized emails will make your business stand out from the rest.

Increase your online presence by promoting your products on popular online website. Having your brand recognized can be a powerful way to increase your business success. Post on sites that get tons of traffic for the best results.

TIP! It may cost money to buy a domain name that you are happy with. You most likely will not get the domain name that matches your company name.

A common strategy used by internet marketers is to offer loyalty discounts. An example of this would be to offer them 10 percent off orders of $200 or more. Many times, shoppers will spend a few extra dollars in order to receive a good deal.

Offering guaranteed products and risk free purchases can help encourage people to buy from you. This will help your customers to feel more secure and provide some credibility for you and your company. By placing the risk on yourself and guaranteeing your products or services, customers will feel better about trusting you.

Use descriptions that promise fast results and speedy responses when you are advertising your products and services. Talk about how fast your system is, how quickly an order can be placed, how soon your customer can receive the product and how quickly the product will improve their lives. Useful phrases are ?speedy downloads?, ?quick confirmations?, and ?secure checkout?.

TIP! You should always remember that headlines sell when writing, so always use them in your promotional materials. These should be catchy and showcase something that you are offering for sale on your own site.

Viral videos and media can help improve the success of your website. In the video description, be sure to include a backlink to your website. This can increase your site traffic!

If you want to be a winner with Web marketing, a great website is essential. Check frequently for broken links, outdated information and any other problems that could detract from the message and product you are presenting. Visitors who cannot use your site correctly cannot purchase anything.

Make sure your purchasing software uses strong encryption. You should start an account which allows you to have safe transactions done on your site. Paypal is one of the most popular. Think about your customer?s security when you design your website. A password should always precede personal information given as they checkout.

TIP! Always provide the information and answers that customers are seeking and make it easy to find. You don?t need to create an entire encyclopedia, but having a good amount of information that your customers can easily access is important.

As previously mentioned, the main goal of a business should be to achieve and maintain longevity, typically through long-term growth. Success is measured by how long you can stay successful, whether you are a small company or a Fortune 500 company. Every business starts at the bottom, so implement these tips to increase business today

Humongous, gassy halo found surrounding Milky Way

The findings were reported today by a research team using data from NASA?s Chandra X-ray Observatory.

By Jason Major,?Universe Today / September 24, 2012

Artist?s illustration of a hot gas halo enveloping the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds

NASA/CXC/M.Weiss; NASA/CXC/Ohio State/A.Gupta et al.

Our galaxy ? and the nearby Large and Small Magellanic Clouds as well ? appears to be surrounded by an enormous halo of hot gas, several hundred times hotter than the surface of the Sun and with an equivalent mass of up to 60 billion Suns, suggesting that other galaxies may be similarly encompassed and providing a possible clue to the mystery of the galaxy?s missing baryons ? a.k.a.,?dark matter.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The findings were?reported?today by a research team using data from NASA?s?Chandra X-ray Observatory.
?
In the artist?s rendering above our Milky Way galaxy is seen at the center of a cloud of hot gas. This cloud has been detected in measurements made with Chandra as well as with the European Space Agency?s?XMM-Newton space observatory?and Japan?s?Suzaku?satellite. The illustration shows it to be nearly 300,000 light-years across ? and it may actually be even bigger than that.

While observing bright x-ray sources hundreds of millions of light-years distant, the researchers found that oxygen ions in the immediate vicinity of our galaxy were ?selectively absorbing? some of the x-rays. They were then able to measure the temperature of the halo of gas responsible for the absorption.

The scientists determined the temperature of the halo is between 1 million and 2.5 million kelvins ? a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the Sun.

But even with an estimated mass anywhere between 10 billion and 60 billion Suns, the density of the halo at that scale is still so low that any similar structure around other galaxies would escape detection. Still, the presence of such a large halo of hot gas, if confirmed, could reveal where the missing baryonic matter in our galaxy has been hiding ? and possibly hint at the true nature of dark matter throughout the Universe.

Read: Dark Matter Filaments Bind Galaxies Together

Even though previous studies have indicated halos of warm gas existing around our galaxy as well as others, this new research shows a much hotter, much more massive halo than ever detected.

?Our work shows that, for reasonable values of parameters and with reasonable assumptions, the Chandra observations imply a huge reservoir of hot gas around the Milky Way,? said study co-author Smita Mathur of Ohio State University in Columbus. ?It may extend for a few hundred thousand light-years around the Milky Way or it may extend farther into the surrounding local group of galaxies. Either way, its mass appears to be very large.?

Senegalese mark 10 years since their "Titanic"

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? Ten years after one of the worst maritime disasters in history, a handful of survivors gathered in Senegal on Wednesday to pay homage to the victims of the Joola, a Senegalese ferry that sank off the coast of Gambia, killing 1,863 people.

That's 361 more than were killed when the Titanic went down nine decades earlier, claiming 1,502 lives. The MV Le Joola took off on Sept. 26, 2002 from Ziguinchor, the capital of Senegal's southernmost province. The government-owned ferry was carrying several times the maximum recommended number of passengers, and survivors say it was already listing from the excess weight when it ran into a storm.

Survivors wept at the graves Wednesday, most of which are unmarked in the Dakar cemetery that was created for the disaster. The bodies were so decomposed that most could not be identified and one relative of the dead went from headstone to headstone, placing his hand on the white marker, as if to find his loved one.

Among the 64 who made it out alive was Victor Djiba, a soldier who was assigned to work on the boat. He got out only because he knew the layout of the ferry. But his friend, with whom he was sharing a cabin, perished.

"Since 2002, I have to use sleeping pills to be able to fall asleep. And even with the pills, I still don't manage to fall asleep until 2 a.m.," said Djiba, who attended an interfaith ceremony held at the cemetery on Wednesday. "When the boat started to sink, I was in a cabin with my colleague. I feel responsible for his death," he said.

COIT Cleaning and Restoration Company ... - Franchising.com

COIT, a leading supplier of specialty cleaning and disaster restoration services, is recognizing National Mold Awareness Month by reminding home and business owners that it is important to take steps to prevent mold from invading any building or structure.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 25, 2012 -??By the time you see or smell mold in your home or business, you might already have a problem that will be difficult to address,? Bob Kearn, President and CEO of COIT, said. ?In addition to posing a threat to the actual structure, there is scientific evidence that mold can be linked to a number of human health problems. Because eradicating mold can be costly and take time, the best strategy is to prevent its growth in the first place.?

The Institute of Medicine has found sufficient evidence to link indoor mold exposure to upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition. The Institute also found limited or suggestive evidence linking indoor mold exposure to respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children. Mold spores occur both indoors and outdoors, and can enter a house or place of business through open doorways, windows, or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems with outdoor air intakes. Mold spores can also attach themselves to clothing, shoes, bags, and pets, which then carry the spores inside. Although mold is naturally present almost everywhere, it can cause a problem if spores land in a damp area that promotes their ability to breed.

COIT recommends that home and business owners pay close attention to the humidity levels in their homes and offices and use a dehumidifier when necessary. In addition, regularly inspect roofs, pipes, walls, and even plant pots to be sure there are no leaks or areas with excessive moisture. Asking family members and guests to remove shoes before entering a home will prevent mold spores from being tracked inside on footwear. Scheduling regular professional carpet and area rug cleanings will prevent mold spores from taking hold among carpet and rug fibers. It?s also important to schedule regular cleaning services for draperies (which can be exposed to mold spores through open windows), upholstery, and tile and grout, especially if furniture or tiling has been regularly exposed to a damp environment.

COIT regularly performs air duct cleanings designed to eliminate not only a potential build-up of mold spores, but also dust and other allergens or contaminants (such as bacteria, fungus, mildew and other microbes) that can collect and build up in any heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. To combat mold spores and for a generally healthier indoor environment, COIT suggests scheduling an air duct cleaning every two to three years.

If you have further questions about preventing mold in your home or business, or if you believe you have a mold problem that requires attention, call (800) ? FOR-COIT.

Going to university in London - English Editing

By English Trackers Blogger, on September 26th, 2012

In addition to our regular posts, written by members of our team at?English Trackers, we also encourage those who have something to say about language and are interested in penning a guest post for our blog to get in touch with us. This guest post is by Matt Lindley -?English teacher, blogger and Londoner.

London?s a great city to study in, with more to see and do than practically anywhere else in the UK. It?s even better for international students, as there?s a large community of students from around the world that you can be a part of. This guide takes a look at why London, how to get a visa, and how much studying in the capital will cost you.

?

Why London?

There are many reasons to study in the Big Smoke*; here are a few of my favourites:

  • There?s a huge range of courses?

London?s 45 universities offer a staggering 30,000 different courses, so it?d be almost impossible not to find a course that?s right for you.

  • Employers will value your qualification

A degree from a London university is highly regarded by employers the world over. Did you know that London has more universities in the world?s top 200 than any other city on the planet?

  • It?s a welcoming place for international students

London?s a truly global city with students from over 200 nations studying here, so you should feel right at home. It?s also likely that your university organises clubs and welcome events helping international students settle in and make friends.

  • There?s always something exciting going on

Whether you?re into pubs*, clubs or gigs*, London has so much happening on any given night of the week that it can be hard to decide what to do. It?s also one of the world?s leading cultural cities with many world-class museums, art galleries and theatres for you to explore.

?

How do I get a student visa?

The most important thing is getting a student visa ? otherwise you won?t be allowed in the country. It currently costs around ?300 to apply from outside the UK and a bit more from within the UK. Here?s what you?ll need to do:

  • Demonstrate that you have an appropriate level of English

You?ll have to show that you?re competent at English by getting a good score in the IELTS exam or gaining another widely-recognised English qualification such as CAE and CPE.

  • Prove that you?ve been accepted by a London university

You?ll need to provide your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which is the letter you get once you?ve successfully been accepted on a course.

  • Show that you can afford to pay for your studies

This is the tricky one. You?ll need to be able to show that you?ve got sufficient funds in your bank account to pay for your tuition fees and living costs for the time you?ll be in London. The bank account must have been open for some time and show evidence of activity (transactions, etc).

  • Complete the necessary forms?

You?ll need to fill out the required forms and provide documentation such as your passport and photos. The rules for getting a visa change often, so it?s a good idea to check the UKCISA website (www.ukcisa.org.uk) or your chosen university.

?

How much will it cost?

London?s not the cheapest city in the world to study in, but as tuition fees are less than in the US it?s still a popular choice with students who want an internationally-recognised qualification. It?s also easy to find a part-time job while you?re studying to help pay back some of your costs. Here?s a breakdown of the major expenses:

As of 2012, the average cost of tuition fees inLondonis ?11,000 per year for international students, but courses can be found from ?8,000. Students from the European Union or UK pay a bit less.

The London living cost for students is estimated at ?1,000 per month including accommodation (accommodation is ?600 per month). I think in reality it?s possible to spend less than this if you?re good with your money and don?t go out* all the time.

The price of a pint in a pub is ?4.00; a student cinema ticket ?7.50; a cheap meal in a restaurant ?10.00; and a short bus journey ?1.50.

?

That brings us to the end of this short guide. If you do decide to study in London, I wish you the very best of luck!

?*The Big Smoke?- A nickname that can be applied to various large cities. Since the late 19th century, and the Great Smog of 1952, London has often been referred to as the?Big Smoke.

*Pub?- ?public house?. A traditional building where you can buy and drink beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks.

*Gig?- A live performance, normally by a musician, but can also refer to stand-up comedy or a theatrical show.

*to?go out?- ??I'm?going out?tonight? is a general term, meaning to go to a bar, nightclub or party.

Two categories of multiple sclerosis patients defined

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? There are approximately 400,000 people in the United States with multiple sclerosis. Worldwide, the number jumps to more than 2.1 million people. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to treating the millions with multiple sclerosis, what if doctors could categorize patients to create more personalized treatments? A new study by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) may one day make this idea a reality in the fight against the debilitating autoimmune disease.

A research team led by Philip De Jager, MD, PhD, BWH Department of Neurology, senior study author, has found a way to distinguish patients with multiple sclerosis into two meaningful subsets. The ability to categorize patients with multiple sclerosis may open new doors for treatment development.

The study will be electronically published on September 26, 2012 in Science Translational Medicine.

"Our results suggest that we can divide the multiple sclerosis patient population into groups that have different levels of disease activity," said De Jager. "These results motivate us to improve these distinctions with further research so that we may reach our goal of identifying the best treatment for each individual who has multiple sclerosis."

De Jager and his team extracted RNA -- key molecules involved in making proteins from the instructions found in the DNA sequence -- from blood cells of patients with multiple sclerosis. After analyzing the samples, they found distinct sets of RNA molecules among the patient samples. These unique sets formed a transcriptional signature that distinguished two sets of multiple sclerosis patients -- MSa patients and MSb patients -- with those in the MSa group having a higher risk for future multiple sclerosis relapse.

According to the researchers, knowing the category a person with multiple sclerosis is in may help doctors make more informed treatment decisions. For instance, since a patient who falls into the MSa category is more likely to experience relapse, her doctor may consider a stronger treatment for the patient.

In light of the discovery, the researchers remain cautious about the findings.

"Our study is an important step towards the goal of personalized medicine in MS, but much work remains to be done to understand under which circumstance and in combination with which other information this transcriptional signature may become useful in a clinical setting," said De Jager.

However, from the pre-clinical perspective, the researchers recognize that the findings are essential because they build on earlier studies that had suggested that this structure might be present.

"The study will further enable the community of MS researchers to build upon this transcriptional signature with other data in order to enhance patient care in the future," said De Jager.

Syrian mortar bombs land in Israeli orchard

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Mortar rounds fired from Syria hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday in a spill-over from the conflict in the Arab country.

The Israeli army said the rounds landed harmlessly in an orchard and were not aimed at Israelis.

Israel had lodged a complaint with the United Nations observer force that monitors the de facto truce between the two countries, a military spokesman said.

A source in the area said the orchard belonged to an Israeli agricultural community which lies close to Syrian villages where fighting has flared between Syrian rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

The rounds were apparently fired at the Syrian village of Jubata Al Khashab in response to rebel activity in the area, Israeli media said. A similar incident occurred in the same area on July 23, the army said.

Israel captured the Golan Heights during the 1967 Middle East War and annexed the area in 1981, in a move that was not recognised internationally.

The Israeli military staged an exercise on the Golan Heights last week to test its battle readiness amid tensions over Iran's nuclear program and the civil war in Syria.

Iran says new drone can cover much of region

(AP) ? A senior Iranian commander says the country's newly-produced missile-carrying drone has a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), which puts much of the Middle East within operating distance of Iranian territory.

The Monday report by the semiofficial Fars agency quoted Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who is aerospace chief of the powerful Revolutionary Guards.

His description of the aircraft, which Iran first announced last week, is like that of the American RQ-170 Sentinel, one of which went down in Iranian territory last year. Iran said it was building a copy of the RQ-170 in April.

The Islamic Republic's defense industry frequently announces technological breakthroughs that are impossible to verify independently.

Gen. Hajizadeh said the drone has civilian and military uses.
