In my opinion, making ALL movies English is ruining it as expression of oneself. What if the director or script writer or storyteller felt more comfortable with another language (such as the case of Del Toro's Pan's labyrinth)? Does it ruin its beauty by not being in English?
I actually think some movies are perfectly wonderful with using another language because it feels more authentic that way. Much more honest.
I’ve tried all kinds of iPad apps that can turn the tablet into a musical instrument. There are piano apps, drum apps, guitar apps, etc. They are all fun to play with, but this is the first time I’ve actually been thoroughly impressed with one. Even behind thick glass at the zoo, rattlesnakes look dangerous. Then you walk into the sunshine and visit the outdoor exhibits. You smile as the Komodo dragon ? at up to 300 pounds (136 kilograms), the world's heaviest lizard ? plays tug-of-war with its keeper. In the bird exhibit, hooded pitohuis (pit-eww-ease) from Papua New Guinea flutter to the top perch in a colorful flurry of orange and black feathers. Their song fills the air. A duck-billed platypus, a strange Australian mammal, swims in quick circles in its murky pond while hunting for crustaceans. You've forgotten about the venomous snakes and spiders.?
However, even lizards, birds and mammals sometimes arm themselves with chemical weapons. You've just walked past three examples. They each possess powerful poisons. And these interest scientists not only because of how the chemicals aid in the animals? defense but also because modified versions of these weapons may one day aid medicine.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Doc Watson, the blind Grammy-award winning folk musician whose mountain-rooted sound was embraced by generations and whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world, died Tuesday at a North Carolina hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his manager. He was 89.
Watson died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was hospitalized recently after falling at his home in Deep Gap, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He underwent abdominal surgery while in the hospital and had been in critical condition for several days.
Arthel "Doc" Watson's mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own grandson, who performed with him.
Richard Watson said in a 2000 interview with The Associated Press that his grandfather's playing had a humbling effect on other musicians.
"Everybody that's picked with you says you intimidate them, and that includes some of the best," Richard Watson told him.
The ever-humble Doc Watson found it hard to believe.
Country and bluegrass singer Ricky Skaggs said Tuesday evening, "An old ancient warrior has gone home."
"He prepared all of us to carry this on," Skaggs added. "He knew he wouldn't last forever, He did his best to carry the old mountain sounds to this generation."
Doc Watson was born March 3, 1923 in Deep Gap, about 100 miles northwest of Charlotte. He lost his eyesight by the age of 1 when he developed an eye infection that was worsened by a congenital vascular disorder, according to a website for Merlefest, the annual musical gathering named for his late son Merle.
He came from a musical family ? his father was active in the church choir and played banjo and his mother sang secular and religious songs, according to a statement from Folklore Productions, his management company since 1964.
Doc Watson's father gave him a harmonica as a young child, and by 5 he was playing the banjo, according to the Merlefest website. He learned a few guitar chords while attending the North Carolina Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, and his father helped him buy a Stella guitar for $12.
"My real interest in music was the old 78 records and the sound of the music," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the website. "I loved it and began to realize that one of the main sounds on those old records I loved was the guitar."
The wavy-haired Watson got his musical start in 1953, playing electric lead guitar in a country-and-western swing band. His road to fame began in 1960 when Ralph Rinzler, a musician who also managed Bill Monroe, discovered Watson in North Carolina. That led Watson to the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 and his first recording contract a year later. He went on to record 60 albums, and wowed fans ranging from 60s hippies to fans of traditional country and folk music.
According to the Encyclopedia of Country Music, Watson took his nickname at age 19 when someone couldn't pronounce his name and a girl in the audience shouted "Call him Doc!"
Seven of his albums won Grammy awards; his eighth Grammy was a lifetime achievement award in 2004. He also received the National Medal of the Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1997.
"There may not be a serious, committed baby boomer alive who didn't at some point in his or her youth try to spend a few minutes at least trying to learn to pick a guitar like Doc Watson," Clinton said at the time.
Folklore described Watson as "a powerful singer and a tremendously influential picker who virtually invented the art of playing mountain fiddle tunes on the flattop guitar."
Countless guitarists tried to emulate Watson's renditions of songs such as "Tennessee Stud," ''Shady Grove," and "Deep River Blues."
Doc Watson's son Merle began recording and touring with him in 1964. But Merle Watson died at age 36 in a 1985 tractor accident, sending his father into deep grief and making him consider retirement. Instead, he kept playing and started Merlefest, an annual musical event in Wilkesboro, N.C., that raises money for a community college there and celebrates "traditional plus" music.
"When Merle and I started out we called our music 'traditional plus,' meaning the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the festival's website. "Since the beginning, the people of the college and I have agreed that the music of MerleFest is 'traditional plus.'"
Doc Watson has said that when Merle died, he lost the best friend he would ever have.
He also relied on his wife, Rosa Lee, whom he married in 1947.
"She saw what little good there was in me, and there was little," Watson told the AP in 2000. "I'm awful glad she cared about me, and I'm awful glad she married me."
In a PBS NewsHour interview before a January appearance in Arlington, Va., Watson recalled his father teaching him how to play harmonica to a tune his parents had sung in church, as well as his first bus trip to New York City to perform in the early 1960s. He gave an early solo performance at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village, a hot spot for the folk music revival, and later played Carnegie Hall.
Telling the stories in a folksy manner, he broke into a quiet laugh at various points. He said he still enjoyed touring.
"I love music and love a good audience and still have to make a living," Watson said. "Why would I quit?"
Musician Sam Bush, who has performed at every Merlefest, began touring with Doc and Merle Watson in 1974, occasionally substituting for Merle when he couldn't travel.
"I would sit next to Doc, and I would be influenced by his incredible timing and taste," Bush said after Watson's recent surgery. "He seems to always know what notes to play. They're always the perfect notes. He helped me learn the space between the notes (are) as valuable as the ones you play."
Bush said he was also intimidated when he began playing with the man he calls "the godfather of all flatpickers."
"But Doc puts you at ease about that kind of stuff," Bush said. "I never met a more generous kind of musician. He is more about the musical communication than showing off with hot licks."
His blindness didn't hold him back musically or at home.
Joe Newberry, a musician and spokesman for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, remembered once when his wife called the Watson home. Rosa Lee Watson said her husband was on the roof, replacing shingles. His daughter Nancy Watson said her father built the family's utility shed.
Guitarist Pete Huttlinger of Nashville, Tenn., said Doc Watson made every song his own, regardless of its age. 'He's one of those lucky guys," said Huttlinger, who studied Watson's methods when he first picked up a guitar. "When he plays something, he puts his stamp on it ? it's Doc Watson."
He changed folk music forever by adapting fiddle tunes to guitar at amazing tempos, Huttlinger said. "And people all over the place were trying to figure out how to do this," he said. "But Doc, he set the bar for everyone. He said, 'This is how it goes.' And people have been trying for years to match that.
"He took it (the guitar) out of the background and brought it upfront as a melody instrument. We're no longer at the back of the class. He gave the front to us."
Wayne Martin, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, said recently that Watson took southern Appalachian forms of music such as balladry, old-time string music and bluegrass, and made them accessible.
"He takes old music and puts his own creativity on it," Martin said. "It retained its core, yet it felt relevant to people today."
Said Bush: "I don't think anyone personifies what we call Americana more than Doc Watson."
North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said in a statement Tuesday evening that Watson will be missed.
"Over his long and brilliant career, Doc Watson traveled the world playing the music he loved, but his heart never strayed far from his home in Deep Gap, N.C.," Perdue said. "Our state was fortunate to have such a worldwide ambassador of North Carolina's culture and heritage."
In 2011, a life-size statue of Watson was dedicated in Boone, N.C., at the spot where Watson had played decades earlier for tips to support his family, according to the Folklore statement. At Watson's request the inscription read, "Just One of the People."

When doing home improvements in the bathroom, make sure you use the proper caulking for the job at hand. If you do not use water proof caulking and only use water resistant caulking, you are headed for disaster. Water will seep in and rot the material leading to an expensive repair.
When it comes to home improvement, take your current space into consideration before adding on with new construction. It may be much more cost effective to convert either an attic or basement into living space. Added costs come into play when you have to add more to your foundation or roof area.
To create the appearance of depth in a narrow or otherwise constricted room, hang a large mirror on the wall. The mirror will reflect the wall across from it, providing the illusion of a deeper space. For an especially nice effect, hang the mirror across from a wall that is painted or papered in a coordinating-but-different color.
Put a ring on your power tool plugs! To keep small children from plugging these potentially dangerous tools into a power outlet, just slip a key ring through the holes on the tips of the plug prongs. For bigger plugs you can even use s small padlock to safeguard the tools against potentially hazardous use.
Try replacing the house numbers outside your house for some easy home improvement. If the house numbers on your house are old, buy some new ones. Try looking for modern house numbers made of stainless steel, aluminum, or brass. Match them with the finish on your exterior light fixtures for better curb appeal.
Do your homework before starting to demolish. It might seem easy, even fun, to rush into a demolition and start cutting holes or ripping down walls. Always check first for electrical wires or components that are still attached. It might be too expensive to completely remove the structure, so it?s better to double check first.
Tear your chipped and broken plaster down to the lathes in the walls of your old house. If the plaster material is failing, the only solution is to get rid of the old and replace it with another wall covering. Believe it or not, the really old stuff was plaster mixed with horse hair. You can improvise a pretty good match with just drywall mud!
Don?t throw out left over wallpaper! Instead use it to add color and pattern to your home. You can cover a whole headboard in a bold print to make a big statement. Or, use smaller pieces for the recessed areas of doors or cabinets. Paste scraps in a patchwork pattern on wall or door trim for a great border effect. Be creative and thrifty by using wallpaper leftovers in your projects.
If you find the home improvements you want to make overwhelming, only do one at a time. This can help you to finance the project yourself by allowing you time to amass some savings and can make the situation a lot less stressful. Take your time and enjoy your home as each upgrade is completed.
Surely, you found the information that preceded to be helpful for many different projects around your house. A bit of knowledge about home improvement can go a long way in helping you transform your house into your home. Take on the challenge of making the improvements on your home with the help of the included information.

There are more 27-inch all-in-one desktops on the market these days, but very few are worth big bucks. Some fall short on the visuals, while others fall short on the sound. The Dell XPS One 2710 ($1,999 direct) manages to put almost every technology and feature we're looking for in a compact and stylish chassis. And it has excellent performance, thanks to its new Core i7 (Ivy Bridge) processor and Nvidia GeForce (Kepler) graphics. If you're a media enthusiast, this is the desktop you're looking for. It's our new Editors' Choice for high-end all-in-one desktop PCs.
Design and Features
The newest XPS One gives up the previous two-peg leg and easel design in favor of a cleaner base and hinged arm design. The computer's internal components are built into the screen chassis, connected to the base via that hinged arm. The hinge gives the user a decent amount of tilt, accommodating most seated and standing positions. The base doesn't swivel, and there's no height adjustment, so it's not necessarily perfect, but you will get similar viewing angles as the HP Omni 27 ($1,249 direct, 4 stars) and Apple iMac 27-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,999 list, 4 stars). The screen itself is crisp and bright with decent viewing angles and 2,560 by 1,440 resolution. The screen is large enough to work as a mid-sized HDTV as well as a large screen all-in-one desktop PC.
There's an antenna jack on the back and built-in TV Tuner for over-the-air broadcasts. The HDMI-in port will work with settop boxes from your cable company, and the system comes with an IR blaster to control those settop boxes. The front panel has a touch-sensitive and backlit row of soft keys. The soft keys control onscreen functions like brightness, contrast, etc. The top-mounted HD webcam can be switched off with a physical switch, handy for the privacy-obsessed. You can also use the webcam for logging into the system, once the facial recognition software learns your face. Like other all-in-ones with screens that float above the base, you can store the keyboard under the screen when you're not using it.
Feature-wise, the XPS One 2710 has made quite a few intelligent choices. For one, Dell has jettisoned USB 2.0 ports entirely. Instead, this system has six USB 3.0 ports. This helps eliminate end user confusion, as there is no "wrong" port for your speedy external USB 3.0 hard drive (remember: USB 3.0 ports are still backward-compatible to USB 2.0 devices). One of the two side-mounted USB ports is a "Sleep Charge" port which will remain active even though the system is off. That way, you can charge your tablet or phone.
About the only nits I could find are that the USB 3.0 ports aren't colored blue as they are on many USB 3.0 hard drives. It's a minor nit, since all of the USB ports are USB 3.0, but the practice still bucks current usability trends. The HDMI-in port helps extend the life of the monitor even after the internal CPU is obsolete, and the system also comes with HDMI-out, which lets you extend the usable workspace in Windows with a second monitor.
The system comes with an internal power supply, so there's no power brick cluttering up your floor. Our review unit came with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, so you can use the less crowded 5GHz bands for better performance (though you need a router is also 5GHz capable to use if you want to use the 5GHz bands). There's an IR remote for the built-in TV tuner, and the slot-loading optical drive is a Blu-ray player, so you're covered for entertainment options. Speaking of entertainment, the XPS One eschews the trend of tinny speakers and low-volume level found on some all-in-one desktops like the Asus ET2700INKS-B062C ($1,499 list, 3.5 stars). The sound coming from the XPS One 2710 was forceful and distortion-free. Dell uses Waves MaxxAudio 4 sound enhancement (think Beats without Dre) technology, and it's very effective.
The system comes with no bloatware icons on the desktop when you first boot it up. This is good because you want less clutter, not more. The included 2TB hard drive is plenty for the average family user, and you can add more with the USB 3.0 ports (with an external hard drive). The 32GB mSATA SSD is a MiniPCIe-sized board that works with Intel's Smart Response Technology (SRT) to boot the system quickly, load apps quickly, and come back from sleep quickly. Essentially, the 32GB SSD acts like a hybrid drive with the 2TB main drive. You can't see the SSD in Windows as a separate drive, but you will feel the extra performance compared to a similar system without SRT. The XPS One 2710 comes with a standard one-year warranty.
Performance
The new quad-core Core i7-3770s processor in the XPS One and the SRT-optimized drive setup garner high scores on the benchmark tests. The XPS One leaves older systems like the Apple iMac, HP Omni 27, and HP TouchSmart 620-1080 3D ($1,899 direct, 4 stars) in the dust on the PCMark 7 benchmark, which measures whole-system performance. Likewise, the new Nvidia GeForce GT 640M GPU helps the XPS One gain playable scores on Crysis (70 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (46 fps) at medium settings. While the XPS One does well at the 3D tests, the AMD Radeon HD 6970 in the iMac helps it stay on top at 3D tests. The Dell XPS One rivals the iMac on multimedia tasks, however. The Dell's 1:09 time on our Handbrake video encoder test and 2:53 on the Photoshop CS5 test are quicker than the iMac and HP Omni 27. Suffice to say the XPS One is one fast desktop PC.
The last Editors' Choice for high-end all-in-one desktops is the HP TouchSmart 610-1065qd ($1,789.99 list, 5 stars). Though that system has a touchscreen and innovative tilt mechanism, both technologies aren't really necessary for the type of user that wants the best multimedia enjoyment desktop on the market, which is what the Dell XPS One 2710 represents. The XPS One 2710 gives the entertainment enthusiast great sound, sparkling video, a plethora of media sources (Internet streaming, Blu-ray, downloads, OTA TV tuner), an attractive chassis, plus the power to create her own media content. The target point changes from time to time, but for now, the high-end all-in-one desktop to beat is our new Editors' Choice, the Dell XPS One 2710.
COMPARISON TABLE Compare the Dell XPS One 2710 with several other desktops side by side.

A European Union (EU) prosecutor says an Israeli man suspected of running an organ trafficking network has been arrested in Israel.
?We have received information that Moshe Harel has been arrested in Israel on organ trafficking and other related offences,? EU special prosecutor Jonathan Ratel said.
Harel is wanted in Kosovo, where he and his colleagues reportedly carried out some 30 illegal kidney transplants and removals. Kosovo authorities have issued an international arrest warrant for him.
Harel?s trafficking ring used to prey on donors from poor Eastern European and Asian countries, who were promised about 15,000 euros (USD 19,000) to become organ donors.
Israel has not yet confirmed Harel?s arrest.
Reports earlier this week by Ha?aretz, indicate that at least 10 Israeli citizens were arrested for being members of an organ trafficking gang.
The Italian New Generation Foundation for Human Rights and the Everyone Group has presented evidence indicating that Sinai locals harvest the organs of the people they transfer to Israel. In this connection, a number of mass graves have been found containing the corpses of Africans missing some of their organs.

Female GOP House Members Are 'Literally Battered Women,' Democrat Tells Ed Schultz News Buster ^ | May 25, 2012 | Jack Coleman

Not only that, a member of Congress doesn't know what "literally" means.
It's not often Ed Schultz is taken aback when one of his loopy left-wing guests makes an outlandish claim, but that's what happened on his radio show Wednesday. (audio clip after page break)
Schultz was talking with Democratic Congresswoman Gwen Moore about GOP Rep. Mike Coffman criticizing President Obama as "not an American." Just as Schultz went over the top in describing Coffman's remarks (for which he's apologized) as "treasonous," Moore was determined not to be outdone in hyperbole. (audio) --
MOORE: Even with all of the obstruction, (Obama's) been transformational in just his first term. And as amazing and outstanding as he, even if you don't, if you didn't vote for him, you have to admit that he's smart, he's decent, and the only thing that they can do is the, are these ad hominem attacks. When you can't attack someone on their ability, the only thing left for you to do is to characterize them as monkeys, as something other than American, and it's sad to see racism in this country resurging, you know, as it was back in the days of the Ku Klux Klan.
First warning sign: Coffman smeared as little more than a KKKer who sees Obama swinging through trees --
SCHULTZ: It's amazing, you're in the same chamber with these people.
MOORE (sighs): Yeah, it is.
SCHULTZ: It is amazing. ... Let's talk about this video that has been produced by Republican women in the House trying to make the case that, you know, the Republican Party has done a lot for women. I documented it last night, put it on the show obviously that they voted against Lily Ledbetter, they voted against the equal pay. I mean, you can go right down the list. President Obama leads Mitt Romney, his opponent, by 15 percentage points in the women's category in the polling. Do you think it'll stay like this? Do you think the Republicans can make up ground on that the way the way they've been voting?
MOORE: Just let me say this, Ed. You know, I know most of the women that were in that video, I know them personally, I've been the co-chair of the Non-Partisan Women's Caucus and vice-chair for several years, taking a leadership role in this women's organization. There are several of those women who I'm sure were dragged kicking and screaming into that room to take that video.
"Dragged kicking and screaming into that room"? A tad much, but what we can expect on any given day. Alas, it got worse --
MOORE: The reality is is that Congress is a very male-gendered oriented institution. Out of the, you know, more than 10,000 people who've ever been elected to Congress, you know, only about 250 of them have ever been women. And certainly we're at a point and time when in 30 years the percentage of women who are in Congress or have been elected is lower than it's been in 30 years.
If only liberals had considered these numbers when they voted against Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell in 2010. Moore followed with her jaw-dropper --
MOORE: And so they are as battered, they are literally battered women in that caucus. Time and again, they've been forced to vote against the interests of women and the consequences for not voting with the Republican Party are great. I mean, you just, male or female, just look at Dick Lugar who cooperated with the president. Or I'm thinking of Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio), who was in that video. She had a primary and was beaten in a primary. She was one of the women that showed up at the non-partisan women's meetings on a regular basis. And so there are, there's a huge cost in being bipartisan, a tradition started by Newt Gingrich when he took over the House in 1994 and has continued forward, that you dare not vote against the Republican Party even if you're voting against your own initiatives and your own interests.
SCHULTZ: So there's a cost to being bipartisan. You think those women went kicking and screaming in front of that and you go so far as ...
MOORE: A couple of them, a couple of them ...
... the number of alleged unwilling participants dropping precipitously in a matter of minutes. Schultz, to his credit, pressed Moore on that alarming claim she just made about women getting beaten up in Congress --
SCHULTZ: And they're battered women in the caucus?!
MOORE (laughs): Yes, yes, they are. They're battered by, um, (gears furiously whirring), you know, not necessarily the mainstream Republicans (and not batteredper se ...), but this is not my grandmother, my grandmother died a Republican, she refused to go along with the realignment, my grandmother for whom I'm named. This is not the party of Lincoln. This is the tea party and to the extent that they have a large, uh, contingency (you mean "contingent," right ...?) in the House, I think that not only are these women battered, but the leadership is battered. When you see John Boehner crying (laughs, more goofily), believe you me, it's because he cannot control, uh, that wild contingency called the tea party.
If what Moore claims is true and she has been aware of this but did nothing to stop it, doesn't that make her ... an enabler?
Gwen Moore -- literally part of the contingency in Congress that turns its back on battered Republicans, regardless of gender.

Hahaha. Liberals are so insanely stupid that sitcoms are written about them. In The Big Bang Theory, Penny?s less than brilliant boyfriend tells Sheldon that he hadn?t been to a comic book store in literally a million years. Sheldon looks at him and says ?literally??.

Gwen Moore (unfortunately my Congressional Rep) is almost the stupidest person in Congress. I say almost because she is in contention with Sheila Jackson Lee and Maxine Waters - formidable contenders.
You can see now why Wisconsin needs someone like Scott Walker. Probably the state's last hope at this point.

Speaking of MSNBC hosts, I always wonder about that dude who bills himself as ?Toure?. I wonder who he is, where did he come from, how did he get to be on a major news channel, why we should listen to him, why he goes by one name, what the signficance of that is, etc.
A certain ?blather? if you will, comes out of the mouths of MSNBC people.
If Scott Walker wins his June 5th recall election, I want to watch MSNBC that night and see if they have a meltdown. MSNBC has been pushing this recall a lot.
I watched MSNBC a bit on election night 2010, and it was fun to see them try to spin those election results. Election night 2012 might be lots of fun too!

There are lots more battered women out there. Some of them report their battering, since the Dems are so concerned about them, and have developed so many programs to help them. Others just work at IHOP.

Gwen Moore has a room temperature IQ and is totally out of her league in the House.
The amazing part of MSNBC for an occasional viewer is how the hosts talk into an echo chamber. The guests are always within 100% lockstep agreement of the hosts and are only there to nod their heads.

Just ask Michelle Bachman about it.

Memorial Day weekend means the season's rapidly rolling along ? the one-third mark rapidly is approaching. In other words, general managers have had enough time to know what they have on their rosters, and more importantly, what they still need in what surely will be wide-open playoff chases.
And, we've had enough time to make the following observations that have gone beyond the it's-still-early category:
AWARD LEADERS
AL MVP: When you're a couple of batting average points from having a Triple Crown winner, this one is obvious. Josh Hamilton is the best player on what clearly has been baseball's best team. Not to ignore the great starts for Paul Konerko and Adam Jones, though. Konerko actually led Hamilton in batting average and on-base percentage through Wednesday.
NL MVP: It was unanimously Matt Kemp in April. Then he slumped, went on the disabled list and the Dodgers won six in a row without him. So at this point, we'll go with David Wright, who through Thursday had the remarkable slash line of .408/.503/.633 in leading the surprising Mets.
AL Cy Young: Nothing mysterious here ? Justin Verlander is first or second in the AL in innings, strikeouts, ERA, WHIP and wins. Much more surprising are the great first two months of Jake Peavy, Derek Lowe, Brandon Morrow and Chris Sale.
NL Cy Young: The statistical difference between favorite Clayton Kershaw and still-unknown Atlanta pitcher Brandon Beachy boils down to Kershaw's better strikeout-walk ratio (4-1 to 3-1). Which makes Beachy's story all the better: Undrafted free agent out of Indiana Wesleyan University, signed for $20,000, started his minor-league career in the bullpen, and four years later, a Cy Young-caliber starter.
AL Manager of the Year: It can only be Buck Showalter, as the Orioles were a near-unanimous spring choice for another last-place finish in the AL East. Nobody knows how long they can hang around, but there are enough positive signs throughout the organization for legitimate optimism. This also could be the year Manny Acta gets his due, while Joe Maddon remains the most interesting manager in the world.
NL Manager of the Year: Nobody was paying attention when the Dodgers turned the corner last August and went 34-20 down the stretch. But everybody is aware of Don Mattingly's team now, as it sat 30 games over .500 at 64-34 in its last 98 games through Wednesday.
It's who Mattingly is winning with that makes his case. Kemp, Mark Ellis, Juan Rivera, Juan Uribe, Jerry Hairston Jr. currently are on the disabled list, Dee Gordon was benched then dropped to eighth in the order, and James Loney's power struggles continue. Yet the wins keep mounting with lineups including Jerry Sands, Justin Sellers, Elian Herrara, Scott Van Slyke and Ivan DeJesus.
AL Rookie of the Year: He's no rookie, of course -- not when it took over $100 million to get him out of Japan. But Yu Darvish is eligible for the award and gets it at this point. But Mike Trout is making it interesting, isn't he?
NL Rookie of the Year: We know where this likely is leading as the season unfolds -- Bryce Harper. Especially when this isn't a particularly strong year for NL rookies. Wade Miley, Yonder Alonso, Zack Cozart and Kirk Nieuwenhuis are off to nice starts.
Best surprise team: Given what's written above in the NL Manager of Year category, the Dodgers shouldn't be a huge surprise. But they have built a solid lead in both the division and wild-card races, and new ownership will add at the trade deadline.
Also, the Nationals have risen to the top of the NL East behind great starting pitching ? and without Michael Morse (expected back in June), Drew Storen (expected back in July) and Brad Lidge (expected back in June).
Most disappointing team: Tie: Angels and Tigers. Albert Pujols has been far from alone, as Erick Aybar, Ervin Santana, Dan Haren and Peter Bourjos also have underachieved. Injuries/losses of Chris Iannetta, Torii Hunter, Vernon Wells have been costly. The bullpen had to undergo a reconstruction and appears to be settling. The infusion of Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo in the every-day lineup has lit some recent offensive sparks.
As it's turning out in Detroit, Miguel Cabrera playing third base has been less of an issue than Prince Fielder playing first base. The offense's problems lie with the supporting cast ? with the obvious exception of Austin Jackson. The bullpen could be bolstered by the trade deadline, but there is hope for the rotation with Doug Fister's return and the expectation that Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello will lower current 5-plus ERAs.
The two-month All-Stars AL? 1B: Paul Konerko, 2B: Robinson Cano, SS: Derek Jeter, 3B: Adrian Beltre, OF: Josh Hamilton, Austin Jackson, Adam Jones, C: Joe Mauer, SP: Justin Verlander, Closer: Jim Johnson.
NL ? C: Carlos Ruiz, 1B: Brian LaHair, 2B: Omar Infante, SS: Rafael Furcal, 3B: David Wright, OF: Matt Kemp, Melky Cabrera, Ryan Braun; SP: Clayton Kershaw, Closer: Jonathan Papelbon.
Biggest disappointments: 1B: Albert Pujols; 2B: Rickie Weeks; SS: Erick Aybar; 3B: Pedro Alvarez; OF: Jeff Francouer, Logan Morrison, Peter Bourjos; C: Nick Hundley; SP: Tim Lincecum, Clay Buchholz, Francisco Liriano; RP: Carlos Marmol, Francisco Cordero.
By the numbers: How much better are the Rangers than the rest of the AL?: Through Wednesday, they led the majors with a +79 run differential. The next-highest AL team was Toronto at +35, and no other team was better than +17.
How much worse are the Twins than the rest of the AL? Through Wednesday, they sported a -69 run differential. Next worse in the AL were the Royals at -22.
Which surprise team is least likely to sustain its current winning percentage? Taking nothing away from the job Terry Collins has done in a very tough situation, the Mets had a 24-20 record despite a -29 run differential through Wednesday.
With the exact same run differential, the Brewers were 18-26. And the Rockies were 16-27 with a -27 run differential. How have the Mets gotten there? They're 9-5 in one-run games, but have lost by scores of 8-2, 14-6, 9-3, 6-1, 7-2, 18-9, 8-1, 8-0 and 14-5.

Playoff bound? Maybe not
??SportsTalk: Big-spending teams like the Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox, Angels, and Tigers are struggling. Which teams are in danger of missing the playoffs? We break it down.
The numbers haven't been definitively crunched, but it is expected that the estimated 32,310 traffic fatalities in 2011 were the lowest on record in the 62 years that records have been kept. Yet the good news about the total number of fatalities masks regrettable news for traffic safety authorities: automobile fatalities are down, but motorcycle fatalities are up.
After a steady rise in motorcyclist death rates through the first decade of the new century, numbers fell in 2009 and the beginning of 2010. Observers hoped the trend would continue, but that didn't happen when deaths ticked up slightly over the course of 2010 and stayed steady through 2011.
Causes are varied, from high gas prices leading more people to ride motorcycles to inadequate training for both riders and automobile drivers on how to ply the roads safely. A report breaking down the numbers also "noted that 29 percent of fatally injured riders in 2010 had a blood-alcohol concentration at or above the legal limit, and 35 percent of motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes were speeding." It didn't, however, indicate how much of those numbers overlapped ? how many of those riders were over the limit when they died.
Nor does it look like current developments will allay the trend in the near-term. Only 19 states require riders to wear helmets, Michigan just repealed its compulsory helmet law and five other states are considering such measures. Again, the overall number of fatalities is welcome news considering how many more people and cars there are on the roads now compared to 1949, but the takeaway for motorcyclists is that there is now more reason to be extra careful when you ride.

Rental Property Maintenance is easily overlooked in times such as these, where money is hard to come by! Maybe your lucky enough to have a property manager who actually inspects your property regularly and informs you of maintenance issues. Who suffers most if your investment property is not maintained? If you think it?s the tenant or the agent, guess again!
Sadly, many property owners refuse to have even major problems repaired. Last week a tenant told us that their current landlord would not even repair a roof leak that had existed for years. So, how much structural damage is being done to that house? Is the leak caused by heavy downpours of rain, or is it a leaking tap or mains water pipe! If your tenant is expected to pay excess water usage as a result of you refusing to repair a leak, guess what! This is how disputes develop.
It?s been like that for years! This is what one tenant told me this week, when referring to water running across their driveway. It turns out the pipes in the bathroom of this investment property have been leaking for three years. The water leak has caused significant structural damage to the home and created unnecessary levels of moisture which in turn attracted white ants, which have all but demolished the deck and the patio. The house is now completely unsaleable because the owner didn?t want to fix the leak!
Tenants have a legal obligation to inform the owner or the owner?s agent of any repairs that are required in the property. It?s no good hiding the fact that something is wrong. If an element is not working on your stove, or your dishwasher won?t work, tell your property manager so they can liquids with the owner and have the problem fixed. We often hear stories of real estate agents who have failed to follow through on maintenance issues. Sometimes investment property owners are faced with enormous repair bills and have to virtually rebuild their homes at the end of a fixed term tenancy!
The best way to ensure your rental property is being maintained is to insist that your property manager visits the property three or four times a year and takes time & date stamped photos that are emailed to you so you can see the current state of your property. This will ensure you?re not having the wool pulled over your eyes!
Most real estate offices will have an online Maintenance Request form facility. This makes it easy for tenants to inform the agent of any issues with the property. If it is an emergency such as an electrical hazard or burst pipe, your lease should state what you can do, or who you can call. Tenants should exercise common sense here and call a plumber or electrician. There is no point calling your property manager at 3am to let them know your toilet is over flowing!
If you own an investment property, consider having it inspected annually for termites, white ants and structural issues. Most property investors neglect to have regular pest inspections, instead opting to wait until it?s too late. Your property manager is not qualified to inspect the property for white ants or structural issues. So, consider a pest inspection or treatment program as part of your investment property maintenance schedule.
